The benefits of Seafood

WHY IS EATING SEAFOOD HEALTHY?

Fish is a high-protein, low-fat food that provides a range of health benefits. White-fleshed fish, in particular, is lower in fat than any other source of animal protein, and oily fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, or the "good" fats. Since the human body can’t make significant amounts of these essential nutrients, fish are an important part of the diet. Also, fish are low in the "bad" fats commonly found in red meat, called omega-6 fatty acids.

WHY ARE OMEGA-3S GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

A growing body of evidence indicates that omega-3 fatty acids provide a number of health benefits. They:
help maintain cardiovascular health by playing a role in the regulation of blood clotting and vessel constriction;
are important for prenatal and postnatal neurological development;
may reduce tissue inflammation and alleviate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis;
may play a beneficial role in cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), reducing depression and halting mental decline in older people.

The omega-3s found in fish (EPA and DHA) appear to provide the greatest health benefits. Fish that are high in omega-3s, low in environmental contaminants and eco-friendly include:
wild salmon from Alaska (fresh, frozen and canned),
Arctic char,
Atlantic mackerel,
sardines,
sable fish,
anchovies
farmed rainbow trout and
albacore tuna from the U.S. and Canada.

WHAT ABOUT FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS?

Besides eating fish, another way to consume omega-3 fatty acids is by taking store-bought supplements. Fish oils come from both fish caught as food for humans and from small fish caught for animal feed, such as Peruvian anchovies.

A word of caution: contaminants such as PCBs accumulate in fish oil just as they do in fish, so make sure to buy capsules that are made from purified fish oil
WHAT ARE OTHER SOURCES OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS?

Alternative sources of omega-3s come from terrestrial sources like flaxseed, walnuts and wheat germ. While still beneficial, these do not appear to provide as a great a health benefit as the omega-3s found in fish, shellfish and marine algae.

DO THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF OMEGA-3S OUTWEIGH THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH CONTAMINANTS IN SEAFOOD?

Fish is generally a healthy food source and can be safely eaten in most cases. But depending on your age and health circumstances, some people should limit the amounts of fish they eat. Consider the following:
For young children and women of childbearing age, excessive consumption of mercury-contaminated fish can severely impact a child's development.
Older women and men may find it an acceptable tradeoff to exceed recommended seafood meal limits to increase their omega-3 intake.
People at high risk of cardiovascular disease must weigh the cancer risk of eating fish high in PCBs with the benefits of eating fish high in omega-3s, in which case the benefits of omega-3s may outweigh the cancer risk (1 in 100,000 - the level recommended by the EPA). However, these chemicals are known to cause serious health problems besides cancer, so the tradeoffs are not simple.
The good news is that there are several low-contaminant, high-omega-3 seafood options available (see list above), so there’s no need to risk eating contaminated fish.

Love's Seafood & Steaks

Located on the banks of the beautiful Ogeechee River, just 15-20 minutes from Downtown Savannah, Love’s Seafood and Steaks on Highway 17 South at King’s Ferry, offers fine family oriented dining in a rustic atmosphere, among the finest to be found in coastal Georgia. Since 1949, this restaurant, under the ownership of the Love Family, has offered to its patrons the very best in fresh seafood as well as premium U.S.D.A. Beef. No prepackaged items will be found here. Our portions are large; however we do offer a lighter appetite meal for children, seniors and the just not so hungry.

The restaurant was renovated and expanded in 1991 to accommodate over 250 seats. The glass enclosed porch overlooking the Ogeechee River is the most popular place to dine for our adult customers. This area as well as the outside patio covered dining, offers spectacular views of the evening sunsets and an occasional manatee or alligator. Most all of the seating available offers these spectacular views. We offer a full bar with a wide variety of your favorite spirits. As a result of our customers continued loyalty a new larger kitchen has also been added, leaving additional dining space in our lounge.

In October 1993 Love’s Seafood was selected by Paramount Pictures for one of the many filming locations of the academy award winning movie “Forrest Gump” starring Tom Hanks.

In May 2007, we were honored to be announced as one of Coastal Living Magazine’s Top 25 Seafood Dives in the Coastal United States.

Love’s is a special place. Please come and have a look around. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers who have continued to help make our business a success over the years.

Reasons You Should Eat More Seafood

Food alone cannot make a person healthy, but good eating habits based on variety and moderation can help keep a person healthy and may even improve health. The U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture issued Dietary Guidelines in 2010 which are intended to help people maintain their health.

The guidelines suggest that Americans should increase their seafood consumption and eat seafood twice a week. In addition, the omega-3 fatty acids found in seafood may provide other significant health benefits. In order to maximize the health benefits of seafood, healthy preparation methods, like baking, are recommended.

Major conclusions in the 2010 dietary guidelines describe the steps that can be taken to help all Americans adopt health-promoting nutrition and physical activity including:
Prevent and/or reduce overweight and obesity through improved eating and physical activity behaviors.

Choose a variety of protein foods, which include seafood, lean meat and poultry, eggs, beans and peas, soy products, and unsalted nuts and seeds.
Increase the amount and variety of seafood consumed by choosing seafood in place of some meat and poultry.

Replace protein foods that are higher in solid fats with choices that are lower in solid fats and calories and/or are sources of oils.

Are Shrimp a Healthy Choice?

Yes, shrimp are a healthy food choice! Second only to canned tuna as a favorite seafood in the United States, shrimp are full of tryptophan, selenium, protein, vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron, phosphorus, omega 3 fatty acids, niacin, zinc, copper and magnesium. In fact, shrimp is so nutrient dense that a mere 4 ounce serving provides over 47% of your daily protein requirements while only giving you 112 calories.

Are Shrimp High in Cholesterol
Since everyone is talking about the lack of vitamin D we get, shrimp are an excellent choice. It provides over 40% of the vitamin D you need in your daily diet. While shrimp is high in cholesterol, it is low in fat. In a study, people were divided into groups to ascertain if the cholesterol in shrimp was bad or not.
One group at shrimp every day while the other group ate large eggs. Eating shrimp raised LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) by 7%, but it also raised HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol that we need) by 12%. The eggs showed the opposite. Triglycerides, that other level that our doctors test for, were actually decreased by 13% when eating shrimp.

Other Health Benefits
Adding shrimp to your diet can help prevent high blood pressure and help control it if you already have it. Shrimp can help protect against heart arrhythmias and some types of cancer. Shrimp is good for your brain. It can help protect against Alzheimer’s and other age-related cognitive problems. Shrimp not only taste good, they can help improve your mood and reduce the incidence of depression.

Can You Eat Shrimp While Pregnant?
Can pregnant women eat shrimp, you bet! Shrimp is highly nutritious and beneficial during pregnancy. The only caveat is that it should be fully cooked. Do not eat raw seafood of any kind during pregnancy. Cooking removes any danger of bacteria, viruses or other problems that may arise with seafood.
While there is reason to worry about mercury in seafood, shrimp is fairly safe in this case. Fish that should be avoided tend to be at the top of the food chain, like sharks and tile fish.

They not only get mercury from their environment, they eat smaller fish and thus carry a much larger load of mercury in their bodies. They are also long-lived, giving more time to collecting mercury. Shrimp are small, short-lived, and as long as they are cooked, should not be a danger in regards to mercury.
Seafood like shrimp provides a lot of omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients that grow healthy babies. Cook them in whatever manner you like as long as they are thoroughly cooked.

If your shrimp are local, do pay attention to local news about seafood advisories. Sometimes things happen that make the local seafood unsafe to eat. Likewise, if you know where your shrimp comes from, pay attention to what is going on in that area. The recent oil spill in the Gulf is a great example. You would not want to eat shrimp or other seafood from that region until it gets the all clear.
